Foley is a method of producing sounds artificially or manually, that sounds similar to what we see in visual.
How Is It Related To Film Making
The sounds that you hear in films are not the real ones. While shooting a film, audio recording is never done with it. It is impossible to get clear voice or background sounds, unless you are not in an empty room, with no or less amount of noise. The background sounds are established separately after the film has completed its shooting.
How Are These Sounds Produced
With the growing technology, many instruments could be used to produce different sounds. But to utter amazement, Foley artists do no use any kind of instruments, but produce it themselves, by repeating the same scenes of the film in an enclosed room or sound studio that is free from other unwanted sounds.
Imagine any scene from a movie, and remove that mesmerizing music going beyond. You will only be left with some noise or some unclear voices. Foley artists work to remove these unwanted sounds and on the more make it catchy and attractive. They make our visual world come alive.
Sound recording includes many different kinds of sounds. For example animal walking, thunder and lightening, roaring of an animal,dripping of water, a person falling, fighting sounds, tapping, horse ride and many more. These sounds are produced by many techniques.
How did Foley Come To Practice
This legacy of sound was brought by Jack Foley. This is a profession named after him. Since then was the reproduction of sound after production of film came into practice. Foley technique was used in the ancient times when televisions were not in use, and people did drama and skits. There they were required to create sounds as drama did not included sets to make you realize about the situation.. This made things easy when film making came into process. Foley was much used in films where people dis not speak, and expressed in actions. Here Foley proved to be very essential.
What Value Does Foley Has
Foley has become a part of a profession where people earn millions. A Foley artist is a person who create sounds for movie. Also known as “FOLEY WALKER” for being an sound expert. They carry out their work in sound studio. There will be a mixer who combines the audio and the visuals with two Foley artists who create sounds.
Foley is not an easy job, it is an art that requires dedications and perfections. The major part in film making is considered as to merge the audio and the video perfectly, keeping in mind that not even a drop of water is heard more or less or is mismatched with the visuals. The sound and the visuals are made to sync. The artists do it so carefully, sometimes many times when audio and videos do not match.
