Saree Wearers To Get A High Risk Of Cancer
According to the new study, doctors from Mumbai Grand medical college investigates that women who wear saree often has a chance to get high risk of cancer. This type of cancer is known as ‘saree cancer’. They have identified these cases of cancer in women who wear the petticoat too tightly tied under the sarees.
It is a rare type of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and generally found in Indian sub continent, where sarees are commonly worn by women through out their lives.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
It is the second most common form of skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma. Risk for SCC include light colored skin, long term sun exposure(UV Rays), old age, exposure to chemicals, burns, old scarfs and some types of human papilloma virus.
Present Research
Dr.GD Bakhshi, An associate professor of surgery at grant says “We have served three women for saree cancer in the last couple of years. While two of the patients identified a couple of years ago, and the third was diagnosed just three months ago. Age of the all women are above 40.”
The disease is caused through skin irritation from knotting their petticoats too strongly in the same area over a long period of time. The cord of the saree petticoat, if knotted in the same area day after day for an extended period, can originate chronic irritation. The regular irritation can result in scaling or pigmentation.
Pigmentation and scaling over the waist of an Indian Women have become very common now a days. Dr. Bakshi informs saree wearers to knot their petticoats looser or use wider belts.
Prevention
Studies are still being carried on the issue. No major findings have been researched till date. Dr. Bakhshi says that this disease is not caused overnight. This is caused after years and is difficult in diagnosing. The cases found were wearing sarees for over 30 years and had persistent irritation along the waist line for over 5 years.
