High cholesterol is ” The Silent killer”. Usually, there are no obvious signs, which makes it difficult to notice the problem before it’s too late.

Cholesterol is produced by the liver and it’s important for the formation of cell membranes, vitamin D, and some hormones. Cholesterol is transported through the bloodstream by special particles called lipoproteins. High-density Lipoproteins (HDL) are “Good Cholesterol”. It returns the “Bad Cholesterol” to the liver for elimination. Low-Density lipoproteins (LDL) is “Bad Cholesterol”. It can build up in the arteries and lead to a heart attack or a stroke. High (Bad) Cholesterol leads to your blood vessels being clogged by fatty deposits. It makes it difficult for blood to flow through your arteries. It can cause serious problems, especially in heart and brain. It can even be fatal. High cholesterol typically does not show any symptoms. However, there are some signs that might make you want to check your cholesterol levels.

  • Rapid Heartbeat

When the blood vessels are clogged, they cannot function properly. It can result in a fast heart pounding.

  • Yellow growths on the upper and lower eyelids

They are painless and do not affect your vision. It is called “Xanthelasma” and it is deposit of cholesterol underneath the skin.

  • A gray ring around the cornea

It is common in older people, and it can be a sign of high cholesterol levels in younger people. Cholesterol can collect in the deeper sections  of the cornea. That is how the ring is formed.

  • Pain in the back of the head and neck

Blocked blood vessels lead to poor circulation in the head. Because of it, your neck and shoulders may feel sore and the back of the head may ache.

  • Tingling in the hands and feet

It is a sign of the lack of nutrients, oxygen and proper functioning of the blood due to clogged vessels.

  • There are  also factors that increase cholesterol

* Poor diet

* Obesity

* Lack of exercise

* Smoking

* Diabetes

A blood test is the only way to know for sure if you have high cholesterol . If your blood test confirmed that you have high cholesterol, there are ways to lower it naturally.

  • Add cholesterol-lowering foods to your diet.
  • Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates, alcohol, caffeine and trans fats.
  • You can also take supplements such as fish oil, COQ10, NIACIN , and red yeast rice.
  • Do not forget to exercise
  • Aerobic and Resistance training are the best for lowering cholesterol levels.
  • Eat a low-salt diet, eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Limit animal fats and eat good fats in moderation.
  • Try to maintain a healthy weight and exercise at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Quit smoking and drinking alcohol.
