Most Expensive Coffee In The World
Black Ivory Coffee is the World’s most exotic and expensive coffee at US$1,100 per kilogram. The main reason of it’s high price is the uncommon method of producing such a coffee.
Black Ivory coffee is a product of coffee produced by the Black Ivory Company Limited in Northern Thailand. It has been produced from the Arabia Coffee Beens consumed by elephants and collected from their dung. The brand of coffee is now available at only Elephant Polo Store in the World.
The taste of Black Ivory Coffee is determined by elephant’s digestive enzymes, which breaks down the coffee protein. Protein is one of the essential factors for bitterness in coffee. Less protein shows in a coffee with less bitterness.
The coffee beans are digested within 15 to 70 hours. During the digestion process the coffee cherries and pulp are removed but the coffee beans are not digested. During this step some kind of rare fermentation occurs which is responsible for giving the elephant coffee it’s special flavor. Once deposited by elephants, the particular beans are collected by the Mahouts (Elephant Rider) and then sun dried and roasted. Almost 10,000 beans are picked for each kilogram of fried coffee. As follows, 33 kilograms of coffee cherries are needed to produce just one kilogram of Black Ivory Coffee.
Black Ivory Coffee provides 8% of their sales and to help fund a physician elephant veterinarian to give free care to all the elephants of Thailand via Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. Extra funds are also used to buying medicines as well as to build a new laboratory. Making of Black Ivory Coffee also gives valuable profit for the wives of Mahouts to help cover school fees, health expenses, food and clothing.
Black Ivory Coffee uses 100% Thai Arabica Beans. This bean contains almost 1% caffeine.
